I’m quite tired of dealing with these Lumineers. I just wanted to fix a small chip and gap between my front two teeth. My dentist says to do that we’ll need to do six Lumineers. I wasn’t crazy about that. I wanted to just do two, but he said they wouldn’t match my other teeth if we just did two. I agreed to do the six because I want my teeth to match. We get everything ordered. They call me when they arrive at the office. When I get there, two of them are broken, including one of the very front teeth with the chip. He says he’ll bond on the others and re-order the broken ones. While he’s placing on the others one of those breaks. I feel like a complete moron wearing partial Lumineers until they come in, but this is what I had to do. Then the new ones come in and they don’t match. He has to re-order them again. The new ones come in and they’re broken too. I’m tired of dealing with this. Is is okay to just ask for a refund and live with the chip?

Dear Rachel,
You’re perfectly within your rights to ask for a refund on this. In fact, it wasn’t the right treatment for you to begin with. If all you wanted to do is fix a small chip and gap, dental bonding would have been the more reasonable treatment. It uses a composite resin to close the gap and fill in the area with the chip. It doesn’t last as long as porcelain veneers (Lumineers are a brand of porcelain veneers), but it is significantly less expensive.
Porcelain veneers make more sense if you were looking to re-make your smile. In that case, you’d want at least six veneers, but that’s because you’re changing a wide array of things about your smile and you want to cover all the visible teeth when you smile.
It doesn’t sound like your dentist is a skilled cosmetic dentist. He may not have been comfortable with dental bonding because it requires freehand cosmetic skills. Lumineers are marketed to inexperienced dentists who are just starting out with cosmetic work. They’re marketed by the Lumineers company as being super easy to place. Yet, what that has done is encourage many dentists who weren’t ready for this type of work to jump into doing these very expensive, advanced procedures.
In your place, I’d get a refund and then go to a good cosmetic dentist in your area to get this fixed. You’ll be much happier with the results and save a nice chunk of money.
